The story so far…..well, Human Resources is not really something that I feel people long to work within from
an early age!! I don’t ever recall telling Mum & Dad that I wanted to be a Human Resource Manager!! However,
that be said, I graduated from Staffordshire University with a BA Hons Degree in Sociology and found employment
with House of Fraser in Shrewsbury in a HR and Secretarial/PA role. I quickly found my feet and found that I really
enjoyed the challenges that working in Human Resources brought on a daily basis.
I started studying towards completion of my membership to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and
Development (CIPD), which took a further three years. By the time, I completed my CIPD qualification I was
working as HR Team Leader in House of Fraser in Birmingham, leading a team of seven HR Administrators in
one of the chains’ largest stores, with over 1,200 employees on one site! From there I successfully gained a
position with a nationwide analytical testing company, holding sole responsibility for eight sites around the UK
(including Southern Ireland). This role was a fantastic challenge, giving me sole responsibility for all aspects of
HR and training within one business stream. An amazing opportunity for all aspects of my development. I left this
role through mutual redundancy, which gave me the desire and opportunity to start up my own consultancy.
I spent three months working on the behind the scenes stuff that comes with starting up your own business,
including applying & successfully gaining support from the Princes Trust, which without I would not be here today.
January 2006 I was ready to roll!! Opened doors & awaited the rush of clients, then realised that I had to actually
do something to let people know I existed! I entered the world of “Networking”!! From here, I have not looked back.
ABC Human Resource Consultancy has developed into a successful enterprise, with clients within Shropshire,
Cheshire, West Midlands, Staffordshire and as far as Oxfordshire. Generally working remotely, I am able to
manage my client base alongside my networking to continue the building of the business. During these difficult
trading times, networking is even more important to consistently remind people that you are still there and what
you are about.
I genuinely believe that this is one of the best decisions that I have ever made and am enjoying the freedom,
challenges, and new horizons that self employment brings. Here’s to the future!!!
